Forensic science applies science and technology to investigate crimes, shaping justice through modern methods. Forensic Science Laboratories (FSLs) are vital for resolving civil and criminal cases by providing unbiased scientific opinions on evidence to help the judiciary. These impartial “mute witnesses” expose perpetrators. Additionally, forensic scientists assist police in collecting proper evidence at crime scenes, acting as indispensable, professional advisors whose integrity remains uncompromised throughout the process. With the evolving nature of crime, forensic scientists work diligently, often under bio-hazardous conditions, to piece together crime puzzles and deliver absolute scientific certainty. The advances in forensics have given law enforcement an unprecedented ability to solve cases, making the strong arm of the law even stronger.<\/p>\n
Historically, Goa relied on out-of-State or Central laboratories for evidence analysis, which caused report delays that hindered investigations and prosecutions. To resolve this, a Forensic Science Laboratory was established in 2011 under the Goa Police Department at Verna, South Goa. This was part of an XI Five Year Plan project\u2014supported by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs\u2014to set up Regional Forensic Science Laboratories and district mobile forensic units across the State.<\/p>\n
Guided by a commitment to public safety and justice, the laboratory steadily expanded its technical capabilities to improve conviction rates and community security. Its operational journey began with Biology\/Serology, Toxicology and Fingerprint. Subsequently, the laboratory was upgraded with other divisions like Ballistics, Computer Forensics, Narcotics, DNA fingerprinting and Psychology.<\/p>\n
To further strengthen its institutional framework, the laboratory officially separated from the Goa Police Department in September 2025 to function as the independent Directorate of Forensic Sciences under the Department of Home.<\/p>\n

To ensure a rapid response time across the State of Goa, the Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS) operates five Mobile Forensic Vans (MFVs) equipped with advanced crime scene kits, enabling expert teams to reach and investigate crime scenes swiftly.<\/p>\n
The Directorate delivers practical training to various law enforcement agencies and arranges facility visits for end users to provide live practical demonstrations as needed. Additionally, specialized training programs covering crime scene management, evidence preservation, chain of custody, and scientific aids to investigation are regularly conducted for Investigating Officers.<\/p>\n
The Directorate offers structured internship programs of variable durations to graduate\/postgraduate students nominated by the educational institutions nationwide, providing hands-on practical experience in forensic operations under expert supervision. These internships cultivate a robust talent pool for the future while offering valuable experiential learning opportunities for aspiring forensic professionals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
